Hello, everyone. It’s been a while. How did you spend your holiday season? I hope that you’ll find hapiness and success in 2014. For Japanese, New Year’s day is more important than Christmas. Till the end of the year, we clean our house and prepare “osechi” the special dishes for the coming year. On New Years, we eat osechi foods with family and relatives. One of New Year’s foods is “zoni” vegetable soup. Japanese eat “mochi” rice cakes boiled in zoni on New Year’s Day. Not only that, we eat mochi with ground soybean, or sugar and soy sauce, in winter.
Near the end of the year, I happened to see rice-cake making (pounding boiled rice into mochi) festival by firefighters when I went to a shopping mall. Firefighters served rice cakes out to shoppers. Besides, they were giving a chance of riding a fire ladder truck to them.
I like tropical fruit juice like guava, mango or passion fruit, which are uncommon in Japan. Also, chocolate bars like Milky way or Twix are so delicious, but they aren’t sold in my town. I miss them.
I tried to eat dragon fruit. Hmm, it tasted like a kiwi fruit.
The cookies and cakes have different colors and shapes from the Japanese ones.
I think that the restaurants in Hawaii are more expensive than ones in Japan. Why don’t you visit Japan? Foods are cheap and delicious. There was only a restaurant we went to that was familiar, it was called “Denny’s”.
My son liked the pancakes.
I have no problem with American food, but my daughter was eager to eat Japanese food. So, I bought a broiled fish and fried dumplings to go at the Japanese restaurant “Ringer Hut”.
I like noodles. There was always a line at the Japanese restaurant “Marukame Udon”on Kuhio Ave. Why?
I attend a cooking class at the community center once a month. It is 6-part series till next month without paying tuition fee. Only fee for cooking ingredients is required. “Today’s menu” was carrot bagel, Thai-style salad, almond jelly and Pizza.

I’ve come to make pizza at home since taking this class. Cooking in the oven allows me to cut down my time in the kitchen. Furthermore I use the ready-made dough at home. At the class, we made dough from flour.
I enjoy the delicious meal every time. My husband also attends a men’s cooking class. It is convenient that the class takes place on Saturdays, his off days. I recommended the class to him. Participants are mostly retired men. I hear they make a hilarious mistake. For example, when they make a soup, they keep chicken and discard the cooking liquid! Wait! That is the soup! They don’t understand …
To tell the truth, I am not good at cooking.
Or rather it’s a bother to cook because I have to do everyday.
My mother is a cookery enthusiast. So I ‘m always compared to her.
Then I decided to go to cooking class once a month.
Today was the cooking day.
